A Thanksgiving outfit has two jobs: look cute in the family photo and still let you go back for seconds.
That’s it. That’s the whole assignment.
But between a hot kitchen, a cold walk from the car and a table full of carbs, it’s harder than it sounds. Here are four easy outfits that check every box.
Thanksgiving Outfits at a Glance
- The dressy dinner: a velvet midi dress, thermal-lined tights and boots
- The cozy classic: a sweater midi dress and a long cardigan
- Room for pie: wide-leg corduroy and a lace blouse
- The holiday color: velvet pants and a soft top
The Thanksgiving Outfit Rules
- Something with a little give. A flowy skirt, a tie waist or a paper bag waist. Plan ahead for pie.
- Layers you can take off. The kitchen is hot. Outside, at least where I live, is not.
- Shoes you can stand in. Between cooking, serving and hunting down whoever took the last roll, you’ll be on your feet.
- A warm layer for the walk in. This momma is always cold, and I’m not making an exception for a holiday.
4 Thanksgiving Outfit Ideas
1. The Velvet Dinner Dress
Velvet feels instantly festive, and burgundy is basically the official color of Thanksgiving. This lined velvet midi dress has long sleeves and a tonal floral pattern, so it’s dressy without trying too hard.

Add thermal-lined tights, tall boots and a cardigan for the walk in. Want a sweetheart neckline instead? This burgundy velvet midi dress works too. It has straps, so the cardigan is not optional.
2. The Cozy Sweater Dress
A sweater dress is the comfiest way to look put together. This burgundy ribbed sweater dress has a button-down front and a tie waist, which you can absolutely loosen after dinner. No one’s judging.

It has short sleeves, so throw a long cardigan over it and add boots.
3. Room for Pie
Wide-leg corduroy with a paper bag waist and a tie sash: cozy, polished and very forgiving.

Tuck in an off-white lace blouse with a high neck and ruffles, and it feels romantic instead of “I gave up.”

4. The Holiday Color
Berry velvet wide-leg pants are an easy way to add color without a busy print. Pair them with a cream lace top or a cozy sweater, and you can wear the same pants to every holiday party through New Year’s.

Don’t Forget the Layer for the Walk In
This is Colorado. Even if dinner is inside, getting there isn’t.
A faux suede toggle coat lined with sherpa goes with every one of these looks and actually keeps you warm. On really cold days, I still say thermals underneath. Here’s my full guide to dressing for a Colorado winter if you need backup.
